Steel City Week 8

6/28

Today was a regular day in the office.  Animal Friends cancelled this week so we didn’t have that segment of the day to look forward to.  A lot of contest winners needed to be called today so we did that for most of the day.  We also had to enter them into the database.  The days have been getting longer because we are full swing in the the summer and there are more events and contests we have to promote and enter and call more winners for our 92 Days of Summer segment!  I wrote up a post today about a promo and contest we are doing with the TLC show Outdaughtered and then Wyatt and I brainstormed what to write for 92 Days of Summer and 4th of July Throwback Week Facebook posts.  We try to find funny GIFs for these kind of posts because people like GIFs more then regular pictures.  We signed our email of these posts to Vicki with Smidge and Smudge because she loves calling us that, because we come in together and leave together and do most of our remotes together.  She told us she loved and and she thought it was so funny.  Later in the day I saw they used the photos I took a few weeks earlier for one of the 92 Days of Summer promo cards that we use on the website.

Today we had our Market Square concert series.  We set up our Bob tent this week and then helped put up some banners around Market Square.  The band was still setting up when I noticed a bunch of police officers were coming into Market Square.  We always set our tent up closest to Dunkin Donuts so I turned to see what the officers were running to and low and behold Nicholas’ Coffee was on fire again.  Someone in the salon up top opened the window and about 5 minutes after that, 6 firetrucks, 2 ambulance, 12 cop cars, and one Red Cross van came into Market Square, all before the band had finished setting up.  They evacuated that whole corner from Dunkin to the Greek place, and we were so confused but were excited because we saw a KDKA cameraman recording both the band and the tent.  I didn’t watch the segment later, since I always work right after Market Square at Hello Bistro, but the cameraman recorded us a lot.  A lot of people came up to us because of this and filled out contest sheets for our enter to win we had this week, which was tickets to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.  The band, Ray Lanich Band, gave out lots of support to the officers and firefighters who were fighting the fire behind us.  Everyone cleared out by the time the band was done, and we packed up the tent, table and plinko board and were finished for the day.

Steel City Week 7

6/21

This week I was by myself in the office and there was a lot of office work to get done.  I had a bunch of people to list in the database for winning contests and then I called over 20 people to tell them they won prizes.  This was very time consuming because I was by myself.  The dog that came in for Animal Friends was a boxer pitbull mix and was very friendly but really shy.  He kept looking out the window because he didn’t understand what was happening.  After this I went and got some lunch, finished calling people and entering them into the database and then I was finished.

Today we were supposed to have our Market Square concert series and promo at Train but because of the rain these were cancelled.

Steel City Week 6

6/7

Today we did our usual office stuff, calling winners and entering them into the database, doing the Animal Friends segment, writing posts.  But we stayed longer today to do some work at the U2 concert.  After our office stuff, we were sent out to take pictures around Pittsburgh to look summery and to make some content for promoting the 92 Days of Summer events we have going on.  One of these events is having live music in Market Square from 12-1.  We walked around and posed some beach objects next to some iconic Pittsburgh buildings; bridges, the Point, and PNC Park.  After this we grabbed a quick meal and headed back to the office.  When we got back to the office, we almost immediately left to go to the U2 concert.  When we got to Heinz field, we carried out the Bob tent, backdrop, and table, in addition to our social media poster, some radio equipment, and some made-at-the-office cutout faces of Bono and The Edge.  We set up the equipment and had a problem with getting the station to connect the radio, so we used our mobile app and kept a phone charging.  We weren’t allowed to do giveaways so we just tried to have people hold up the Bono and Edge cutout faces and stand in front of the Bob banner.  After a few hours of this we packed up the van with our equipment and went home!

Today, we had our concert series in Market Square.  Zack, another guy who works in the promotions office, met the other interns and I at Market Square.  We set up the Q tent, a giveaway for Matchbox Twenty tickets, and a plinko game for DVDs.  We began that an hour before the performers started, so we were able to get some people interested before the event started.  The artists came, and they began setting up soon after we finished.  They were a husband and wife pair and they primarily did covers but with a folk sound.  I took some photos while they were on for the social media and website for Q, since this was a Q event.  I helped out a bit more at the tent and then the artist was finished so we packed up and finished the day!20170607-_MG_1777IMG_4523IMG_002020170609-_MG_2041

Steel City Week 5

5/31

Today when we got to the office, we were told to go the Penguins rally that was being held in Market Square.  They had us do this so we could get some candid photos of the crowd all rallied up.  We kind of were in there against another radio station who was hosting the event.  We were getting the photos to show to listeners on Facebook that “Hey! We are at the rally too!”  When we thought we had enough photos, we texted them to Jordan, our other boss, and headed back to the office.  When we got back to the office it was time for the Animal Friends live stream.  The dog that came in this week was such a shy little puppy.  We quickly brought her to the part of the station where we have the livestream because she was shaking so much from being stressed.  We had to make the livestream a little longer than usual because more people will be able to tune in and watch the longer we have it.  So the radio person who usually does these segments, Zak, talked a bit more about Animal Friends and how to foster dogs.  After this we had contest winners to call and to write into the database.  We picked the winners before calling them as well.  After this we went into the prize closet and we set up some prize bags with a CD, DVD, and bottle opener in a Q92.9 bag.  We really push for Q merch and promotion because it doesn’t get as many listeners or as much of a changing or diverse demographic as Bob.  After picking out some prizes, we were done for the day.

6/3

Today Q was hosting a Daddy Daughter cruise on one of the Gateway Clipper boats.  Fathers bought tickets beforehand and it was a little party for the girls to celebrate Father’s Day with their dads.  There was a contest beforehand with Debbie Wilde and she gave away tickets to the cruise on air.  She was here today too dancing with the girls.  When we got there we hung up Q92.9 banners around the boat, and set up some prizes the girls could win in some games we had planned.  We helped with the different contests that were held and gave out cookies that were given to us by a sponsor.  There was a coloring contest with another sponsor for a Visa gift card.  Towards the end there was a drawing for Kennywood tickets.  After this, the boat docked and we took down the Q signs we hung up earlier and then we were finished.IMG_9864IMG_7776IMG_4813IMG_9000

Steel City Week 4 5/24

This week we began by writing up some social media posts.  We looked up some funny gifs and pictures to go along with the posts.  We also had a couple of contest winners to enter into the database.  We did that and were just about done when we were called in for the Animal Friends live stream.  I think this was my favorite week because the dog brought in was a german shepard mix and I have a german shepherd mix so I was in love with this dog.  We again took more photos and helped the dog face the camera because she just wouldnt face the camera.  We finished the contest database and attached tickets for the winners to their paperwork and that was the day.

Steel City Week 3 5/17

This was technically week 4 but I missed the 10th because I was at home.  But this week I learned how to call winners and how to document winners in the list.  We have to fill out paperwork for the winner and whether or not they answer, so I did this and entered the names into the database while Wyatt, the other intern there, called the winners.  We were soon called in to do the live stream for the dog from Animal Friends that we were trying to get adopted.  We took some photos for the site and then went back to our office, after the live stream ended.  We had more contest winners to call, wrote a post for Facebook and that was the day!

Steel City Media Week 2 May 3rd & 6th

This week was our first week in the office.  I was lucky enough to get this internship with my good friend Wyatt, and we work in the office on the same day, which is Wednesdays.  When we got there, we were given a tour by the promotions department which is Vicki and Jordan.  Vicki then gave us some contests on both of the stations’ websites to write social media posts for Facebook.  We also witnessed our first Animal Friends live stream.  This is when we bring in a pet from the Animal Friends shelter and have a live stream to get the pet adopted.  This week was pretty funny because someone that works at the station ended up getting adopted.  The dog’s name was Chompers.  Since this was the first week we just watched all what was expected of us during this live stream.  We finished writing social media posts and that was our first day!

Later in the week on Saturday, there was a big event the station held at the Waterfront.  They were hosting an event for food trucks to come and for people to and enjoy some food and entertainment.  The interns were mostly just setting up tables and chairs in the beginning.  We then moved to sitting at the stations’ tables, I was at the Q92.9 tent.  People came up to try and win concert tickets and a t-shirt.  Me and another intern later went and gave out maps and drinking wristbands to the people coming in at the gate.  We walked around a bit to see what the food trucks had, and I ended up seeing one of my roommates from freshman year there with her mom.  Eventually, we were given hats and the whole day was exhausting and exciting day!

Steel City Media Week 1 4/22

This week I went to a Jojo concert to bring awareness to our Music Mission initiative, which brings music education to schools.  The concert was held at Stage AE on April 22nd.

I got there early before the concert began and I went in with another intern to meet Jojo.  We waited for a bit and our biggest responsibility was to watch the Music Mission sign.  The group of radio winners that were with us won through our Q92.9 station and they were ahead of us for a meet and greet picture.  Jojo eventually came out and met with all of the winners.  The other intern and I had her hold up our Music Mission sign and told her a little about the initiative.  She signed a t-shirt for the station and we got a picture with her.  Then we split up and enjoyed the concert.  She put on a really amazing performance.  She was someone I had listened to when I was a kid so it was a pretty surreal experience seeing her live.
