This work originated from the years of photographing landscapes in my hometown and the surrounding areas and while living in Pittsburgh, I have had numerous journeys across the state of Pennsylvania to go home to Philadelphia, which increased this curiosity. I have always been curious about the state and the variety in the different landscapes. I have recently learned that my hometown in Bucks County, has the lowest level of poverty in Pennsylvania. This information sparked the interest to learn more about the post industrialization towns of Western Pennsylvania.
Rendition analyzes the land of Pennsylvania and its various regions within it. The artwork highlights the altered ideologies of what is poverty and how people in impoverished areas represent themselves in the form of homes, belongings, etc. The images of these places creates a conversation of how to make connections to different regions of Pennsylvania as a whole, without having a direct correlation to an individual place. Although the regions in this series are all attached by the different levels of poverty, poverty is not what makes them unique. It is difficult to think of poverty without thinking of the stigmas that form around it. The land is what hold these people in their homes and the socio economic crisis each place may or may not be in, is what I am both researching and looking for. The calling attention to these towns evokes the possibility that each person is trying to live their best lives, no matter what their income is.
